Beauty and The Beast: Lessons in Unconditional Love
By: Christlove Thermidor
Growing up, Beauty and The Beast had a confusing effect on me, when it came to what I wanted in a guy. As a little girl, I decided I wanted an unattractive boyfriend. What I mean by unattractive, is that I wanted someone sweet and charming on the inside; someone who reflected the character of the Beast. And I didn’t want anyone to find him beautiful but me. The Beast was a hideous creature…but deep down he was incredibly charming. Although I was young and had not a clue of the message of the movie, I had a good understanding that true love comes to those who wait. Belle and The Beast didn’t fall in love at first sight. The Beast was patient with Belle, and their love for one another was cultivated through a gradual relationship. If Belle didn’t spend time with The Beast she wouldn’t have known what type of man he really was underneath his beastly image.
What I learned from the character of Belle is not to let my looks get in the way of who I am in Christ. I feel like I downplay God’s glory and handcrafted art when I point out the flaws in my own appearance. In the animated version of The Beauty and The Beast, Belle is not even aware of how beautiful she really is.
Now I believe we can be distracted by the world’s idea of beauty instead of God’s message about His Tue Beauty. I pray that we all stop looking at what the world says about how “beautiful” looks like. A woman I look up to, Blair Linne, once said, that “beauty is found in the Beautiful One-The Most High”. I believe this is true, beauty can only be found in the one who is true beauty. “He reveals deep and hidden things…” -Daniel 2:22
If you’re seeking affirmation for your worth turn to God and He will reveal it to you. Like Belle, your happy ending may come in a package that you least suspect!
